Reproduction/Casa Rosada President of Argentina, Javier Milei, announced a package with more than 300 measures to make the economy more flexible
The president of Argentina, Javier Miley, signed a series of decrees aimed at deregulating the economy. The announcement took place on the evening of Wednesday, 20th. Among the measures announced are the revocation of laws in the real estate, supply and price control sectors. The decrees also provide for new rules for labor legislation, and the conversion of public companies into public limited companies so that they can be privatized, in addition to the modernization of customs legislation. In total, according to Milei, 300 revamps will be published in the Official Gazette this Thursday, 21st. Despite having opted for decrees of necessity and urgency, the decrees will be analyzed by parliamentarians. Milei stated that the fiscal crisis faced by Argentina is the responsibility of the political class, which according to him “never wanted to face the problem”. “The crises in Argentina have their origin in the same cause: the fiscal deficit. In the last 123 years, in 113 we have had a fiscal deficit,” he said. “But as the political class never wanted to face the problem, they resorted to increasing taxes or printing money to finance this deficit.” It was the second package of economic measures announced by Milei since he assumed the Presidency. Two weeks ago, he devalued the peso and froze public works and reduced federal subsidies and transfers to provinces in the interior of the country.

The decrees come on the same day that Argentines took to the streets to protest against the president. However, the movement registered low support. Policing was reinforced in Buenos Aires. The plan to contain the demonstration was drawn up by the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, a candidate from the traditional right who joined Milei after coming third in the election. Alongside her, the president watched the operation at the Federal Police headquarters in Buenos Aires. The minister reinforced that the protesters who blocked the streets will be punished. “People are free. If they committed the offense provided for by the protocol that applied today, the consequence would be the loss of the plan and if they did not do so, there would be no consequences”, said the minister. “Most people decided not to go because the size we have for this type of protest is, on average, 20 to 50 thousand people. Today the number has been completely reduced,” she added.
