Milei Secures Argentine Mandate, Bolstered by $20 Billion U.S. Commitment

Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei has solidified his position and secured a critical vote of confidence in his radical economic reforms following a decisive victory in Sunday’s midterm elections. The outcome is coupled with a significant financial pledge – $20 billion in funding – from former U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling a strong geopolitical dimension to Argentina’s economic future.

The legislative elections, held on October 27, 2025, represent a pivotal moment for Milei’s administration, paving the way for the continuation of his controversial austerity measures. These include deep cuts to energy and transport subsidies, substantial layoffs within the government workforce, a freeze on public infrastructure projects, and limitations on wage and pension increases that fail to keep pace with inflation.

U.S. Support Directly Linked to Election Results

The stakes were explicitly raised by Trump, who directly tied future U.S. financial support to Milei’s electoral success. He warned that a loss for Milei would result in the withdrawal of aid, stating plainly: “If he doesn’t win, we’re gone.” This $20 billion commitment, structured as an unusual currency swap, is intended to stabilize the Argentine peso and counter China’s growing influence in the region, which Washington views as strategically important.

The midterm vote allocated 127 of the 257 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Argentina National Congress, and 24 of 72 seats in the upper house Senate. Milei’s governing La Libertad Avanza party emerged victorious, securing 64 seats in the Chamber and 12 in the Senate.

With over 97% of votes tallied, La Libertad Avanza garnered more than 40% of the national vote. This represents a significant win for the relatively new political force, demonstrating a clear shift in the Argentine political landscape. In contrast, the left-leaning populist Peronist movement suffered its worst performance in years, receiving over 31% of the vote, according to reports from the Associated Press.

Milei Celebrates a Turning Point for Argentina

Milei marked the victory with a celebratory appearance at his party headquarters in Buenos Aires, even performing a portion of the death-metal song that has become his signature anthem: “I am the king of a lost world!” He framed the results as a definitive break from decades of Peronism, a political ideology often associated with economic instability and sovereign debt defaults.

“The Argentine people left decadence behind and opted for progress,” Milei declared to his supporters. He also expressed gratitude to “all those who supported the ideas of freedom to make Argentina great again.” Voter turnout was reported at almost 68%, among the lowest levels recorded since Argentina’s return to democracy in 1983.

Prior to the election, Trump had reiterated his conditional support, stating, “If he loses, we are not going to be generous with Argentina.” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had also announced plans to secure an additional $20 billion in investment from private sources.

Austerity’s Impact and Future Challenges

Since his election in 2023, Milei has implemented sweeping austerity measures, drastically reducing public spending and halting central bank money printing. These policies have successfully lowered inflation from 211% to approximately 32% in under a year, earning praise from international markets. However, the economic restructuring has also led to soaring interest rates – currently at 80% – increased unemployment, and depressed real wages, with economic growth remaining stagnant.

According to a post on his Truth Social page, Trump congratulated Milei on his “Landslide Victory in Argentina,” adding, “He is doing a wonderful job! Our confidence in him was justified by the People of Argentina.”

Milei himself proclaimed, according to The Guardian, “Today we passed the tipping point—the construction of a great Argentina begins.” Gustavo Cordoba, director of the Argentine Zuban Cordoba polling firm, told Reuters, “Many people were willing to give the government another chance…. We’ll see how much time Argentine society gives the Argentine government. But the triumph is unobjectionable, unquestionable.” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on October 15 that Milei had “given Argentina a chance to end a decades-long decline under Peronism, and we hope Argentina seizes the opportunity under his leadership.”

Argentina’s next presidential election is scheduled for October 2027, leaving Milei with a significant window to implement his vision and demonstrate tangible economic improvements.
