The Military Africa website reported the arrival of large numbers of Russian forces and weapons to Libya under the banner of the African Legion.

The website estimated the Russian presence in eastern Libya between 1,000 and 1,500 personnel, saying that air bases such as the Al-Jufra base facilitate Russian military flights, as they serve as stopping stations before heading south to other African countries.

The website confirmed that the Kremlin’s strategic goal is to strengthen its influence on the African continent, and added that the “African Corps” will focus on providing security and training services to the governments that host it, and protecting Russian interests and investments.

Weeks ago, the Ukrainian Express Defense website confirmed that Russia had transferred military equipment from the Russian naval base in Tartus, Syria, to the port of Tobruk.

The website quoted intelligence authorities as saying that the transfer operations continued from the fourth to the eighth of this April, and the military equipment was transferred by two landing ships belonging to the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy that entered the Mediterranean two weeks ago.

The Russian website said that the contents of Russian supplies to Libya are uncertain, and cannot be reliably distinguished from satellite images that show equipment being loaded onto Russian ships in Tartous, which may raise fears of new tension in the region.
