The army says it has seized power by ousting Burkina Faso president Roach Mark Christian Cabor. The move comes amid allegations that the country does not have the weapons to fight a deadly terrorist attack.

Shots have been heard from the military base in the capital and the president’s palace since Sunday night. On Monday evening, the military announced that the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration, an organization led by the military, had taken over. Anti-government protests have been going on in the country for months in protest of terrorist attacks, including by al-Qaeda and IS. Pataroos were cheered in the capital. The Constitution was temporarily frozen and Parliament was dissolved.

The military says imprisoned President Roach Mark Christian Cabor is safe. The resignation letter, believed to be signed by Kabor, was released. The letter states that he is relinquishing power for the security and progress of the country. Many African leaders and international organizations have condemned the military move.
