Düsseldorf Milk from the cow is harmful to the climate. Some environmentally conscious consumers are therefore switching to plant milk. The bottom line is that this is significantly more climate-friendly than cow’s milk. But taste aside, plant-based milk is often expensive. Pea milk, for example, costs almost three euros per liter.
In addition, plant milk definitely has deficits in terms of nutritional values and sustainability. For example, the production of one liter of rice milk uses almost 600 liters of water, more than twice as much as is needed for one liter of European cow’s milk (248 liters of water). This was determined in 2018 by the environmental and agricultural researchers Joseph Poore and Thomas Nemecek from the University of Oxford. In addition, climate-damaging methane is also formed in rice fields.
