A team of archaeologists has uncovered around 800 prehistoric artifacts in England’s non-metropolitan county of Kent that date back to the Ice Age. The discovery was announced on the University College London portal (UCL), on Thursday 6.
Among the relics found, which are around 300,000 years old each, two stand out for their size. There are two hand axes made of stone, and the largest one measures approximately 30 centimeters in length.

“We describe these tools as giants when they are over 22 centimeters long, and we have two in that size range,” explained senior archaeologist Letty Ingrey, who is leading the science mission. “The largest, at a whopping 9.5cm long, is one of the longest axes ever found in Britain.”

Size of giant axes may reveal ceremonial use
Given the size of these tools, the researchers believe in the hypothesis that they would have a purely ceremonial use, that is, without actually being used for practical functions.
According to the researchers, these hand axes are so large that it’s hard to imagine how easily they could have been handled and used.

At the moment, scientists don’t know why the tools were so big, or which species of early humans made them. “This archaeological site offers a chance to answer these exciting questions,” Ingrey said.
