A young student seduces her literature professor. He masturbates to her essays. When he then rejects her, she accuses him to the school administration. The pseudo-erotic MeToo neo-noir “Miller’s Girl” isn’t even suitable for a shallow porn film.

Anyone who comes up with the idea of buying a cinema ticket for “Miller’s Girl” is probably not expecting either feminist fireworks or a fantastic film anyway. Nevertheless, a warning should be issued here. Because even if you’re just hoping for a bit of shallow entertainment or just want to adore Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”), you run the risk of wishing for the 93 minutes of wasted life back when you leave the cinema and most likely much earlier. But, that much is clear, he will not get her back, just as Professor Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman) will not get his chance to put a stop to the 18-year-old student Cairo Sweet, a would-be writer who alternates between annoying nerd and sweet vamp.

One day Cairo has the idea to seduce her creative writing teacher. Whether she succeeds or not, or only partially, is the mystery that is intended to keep the viewer engaged, because some scenes seem so artificial and cheesy that they could only come from a teenage fantasy – or indeed they did carried? Reality and fiction are constantly blurred in the pseudo-erotic “she says, he says” melodrama. When Miller dumps Cairo after initial flirtations (and possibly more), she decides to go to the school principal so that Miller loses everything, his job, his reputation, his marriage.

But is Miller really the innocent Joseph who is wrongly accused of seduction by Potiphar’s insulted wife? And is Cairo really the calculating femme fatale who brings randomly chosen men to their doom? The answer doesn’t interest you for a second. Rarely has one seen literature about which the characters constantly speak pompously and which becomes a projection and masturbation foil, so dragged into the mud as in this low-tension, inconsistent neo-noir attempt.

The backdrop, dressed in mysterious gothic core and dark academia, which hardly allows any supporting characters to appear – there isn’t even a lesson scene with a school class that is mandatory for the high school genre – only offers Cairo and her best friend (Gideon Adlon) in theatrical concentration ), the nice coach (Bashir Salahuddin) and the Miller couple make dramatic appearances. This minimalism could have been attractive, but unfortunately remains schematic. Because the men in “Miller’s Girl” are without exception passive and naive, the women, including Miller’s wife Beatrice, are notorious seductresses who want sex constantly.

When Miller tells Beatrice about the talented student to whom he gives extra private lessons in his office, she asks more lasciviously than jealously whether the student is pretty. And when Miller confesses to his wife that Cairo has implemented his assignment to write a text in the style of her favorite author with a teacher-student porn fantasy inspired by Henry Miller, Beatrice wants him to recite the erotic passages to her while they have sex .

The fact that Miller doesn’t hide the forbidden flirtation from his wife, but rather the two act as a team, is the most interesting part of the film, for which the director and screenwriter Jade Halley Bartlett is responsible. If a student were to submit this work to a film seminar, a teacher would have to be blind with love not to let her fail.

“Miller’s Girl” is in cinemas from March 14th.
