Swarm already affects emergency care in Elko, Nevada

Playback/ USA TodaySwarms of crickets are common at this time of year in the Elko region.

Invaders took over a city in the US state of Nevada, in the USA, but they are not aliens, nor humanoids, but crickets. Millions of Mormon crickets invaded Elko, covering roads, houses and blocking access to the hospital. Residents say they are fed up with the presence of insects. “You feel super invaded”, complained Colette Reynolds, in an interview with the TV station CBS. “When you’re at home, it looks like it’s raining because they throw themselves from wherever they’re hanging and fall.” Insects are beginning to cause problems for emergency response in the region. “To bring patients into the hospital, we had to put people outside with brooms and leaf blowers,” Steve Burrows of Northeast Nevada Regional Hospital told KSL TV in an interview. “It got to the point where we had to bring in the snowplow truck and use it to push the cricket piles.” Entomologist Jeff Knight of Nevada said that swarms of crickets are not uncommon in the region, but that they are becoming more evident as human populations expand and occupy previously uninhabited areas. The bad news for the people of Elko is that there’s not much you can do but wait. “The way is to tolerate them. They’ll probably go their own way,” Knight told CBS.
