The Rakuten e-commerce platform reports 650,000 new ads posted at 3 p.m. this Sunday, December 25.

A garment in the wrong size, a duplicate toy or an accessory that is not to your liking? More and more French people are going to resell their Christmas gifts on the Internet, if they haven’t already. According to a Kantar study for eBay, nearly seven million French people will take the leap, or 500,000 more people than last year. For another study, carried out by Ipsos for Rakuten, this figure even climbs to one in two French people, up 8 points compared to 2021.

A finding that can already be seen with the number of new products put online. Rakuten thus reports 650,000 new ads posted at 3 p.m. this Sunday, December 25. Again, this is strong growth, 8% compared to 2021. On the eBay side, the platform expects nearly three million new listings between December 25 and January 3, 2023. The site also undertakes to donate one euro to the CKDB association – which helps hospitalized children – for each gift sold.

Ile-de-France residents are the least satisfied with their gifts

«Just like buying second or third hand items for Christmas, reselling gifts is a way of protecting the purchasing power of the French people but also of participating in a responsible economy encouraging circularity.“Says Sarah Tayeb, deputy general manager of eBay France. Indeed, for 43% of those who plan to resell a gift, it allows them to save money and for 27% of them, to finance the holiday season, compared to 23% in 2020. According to Kantar, this gift resale market represents a total of 336 million euros reinjected into the economy.

In detail, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is the least reluctant to resell gifts. About 26% of its inhabitants regard this act as “bad practice“. On the contrary, 43% of Normans do not accept the resale of gifts. Then, the Ile-de-France residents are the most disappointed French people, with an average of 2.2 unwanted presents. Conversely, the inhabitants of Centre-Val-de-Loire are the least complicated, with an average of 0.5 gifts that are not to their liking.

Whatever your opinion on the matter, this period can be an opportunity to make great deals. Among the most resold gifts are mainly cultural and high-tech products. Books, comics, video games, consoles, toys… there’s something for everyone. On the seller side, if you want to put the odds on your side, eBay recommends taking photos on a white background, describing the object as much as possible and setting a decent price. This should be 30% cheaper for a new product still packaged, 50% cheaper for an object in good condition and 70% if it has been used. It only remains to choose the gift to resell, and hope not to be spotted by those who offered it.
