Millions of Lebanese will soon face water shortages

by time news

DIn crisis-ridden Lebanon, there is now a threat of acute bottlenecks in the water supply. More than four million people could be affected by water shortages in the coming days or lose access to clean drinking water completely, warned the UN children’s aid organization Unicef on Saturday.

The country must take immediate action, demanded Unicef director Henrietta Fore, according to a statement. “The hasty formation of a new government with clear reform commitments is crucial.” The organization also fears an increase in diseases as a result of poor hygiene due to water scarcity.

Hardly any electricity or medication

A month ago, the UN Children’s Fund predicted water shortages for a large part of the six million inhabitants of Lebanon in the summer. The situation has not improved since then. Regular power outages and rising fuel costs have a significant negative impact on water production in the country.

For months, Lebanon has been suffering from the worst economic crisis in its history, which has led to a dramatic shortage of supplies. Petrol stations all over the country have been closed for days due to a lack of fuel. Most Lebanese have to go without electricity for hours every day. Hospitals are also affected by the shortage. There is a lack of medication in pharmacies.

The country is also politically paralyzed. The government resigned a year ago after the fatal explosion in the port of Beirut and has only been in office since then. On the anniversary of the disaster, Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas recently complained about the lack of progress in Lebanon.
