Despite his own foreign nationality and immigration status, Yiannopoulos spent recent years aggressively advocating for strict border policies. On his social media accounts, he frequently called for expansive enforcement measures, writing in a post that the administration must deliver on mass deportations, asserting that without that, nothing else matters.
Work With Kanye West and Recent Controversies
In the years leading up to his arrest, Yiannopoulos pivoted toward working closely with rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. He served briefly as a chief of staff for the artist’s theoretical 2024 presidential campaign before stepping away, and later operated as a spokesperson for the musician.
The professional association placed him in New Orleans at the time of his arrest, as West was scheduled to perform at the Caesars Superdome. The timing links Yiannopoulos directly to a tour stop that follows a series of controversies involving his client, including antisemitic remarks that the rapper has since apologized for.
Public Reaction From Political Rivals
News of the detention drew swift and public reactions from political opponents and former associates within right-wing circles. Among the most vocal was conservative activist Laura Loomer, who had previously engaged in prolonged public feuds with Yiannopoulos.
Loomer took to social media to celebrate the enforcement action, asserting that she was the first person to report on his immigration status and alleging that he had worked with former U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene while in the country illegally.
