In a plan that will cover various national and international cultural scenarios, the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge officially launched the year dedicated to “La Vorágine”, the emblematic work of Huila writer José Eustasio Rivera, in commemoration of his centenary.

With an agenda full of activities that will include participation in events such as the Havana Book Fair and the Bogotá International Book Fair, as well as visits to emblematic places such as Mocoain Putumayo, the year of “La Vorágine” promises to be a celebration of cultures, arts and knowledge.

Minister Juan David Correa highlighted that this commemoration goes beyond being a mere literary celebrationalso being an opportunity to reflect on contemporary issues such as the climate emergency, racism, extractivism and social exclusion. The novel, published in 1924, remains relevant today as a historical testimony and mirror of the Amazonian reality and the country in general.

“La Vorágine” tells the tragic story of a couple of lovers who enter the Amazon jungle, exposing the injustices and suffering of settlers and indigenous people during the rubber rush at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.
