The Ministry of Education (Mineduc) collaborated with the electoral process in Guatemala, facilitating the use of 2,570 educational centers as voting centers. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) previously requested these establishments from the Mineduc to carry out the general elections and deputies to the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) on June 25.

The educational centers were handed over to the TSE on June 22 and are expected to be returned on June 27. Despite this provision, the Mineduc assured that the education of the students will not be interrupted, since the half-year vacation began on June 26, after the first round of the 2023 general elections.

In accordance with the agreement established for the private, cooperative, municipal and public sectors, students will begin their school break and return to classes on July 4. During this week, the school authorities will be in charge of verifying the conditions of the establishments, making sure that they are kept clean and orderly after their return by the electoral boards.

The delivery of the schools was carried out through an act, where the directors delivered the facilities to the Municipal Electoral Boards (JEM) on June 22. Subsequently, on June 27, each JEM must return the facilities to the director of the educational center also through an act.

The Minister of Education reassured parents by announcing the school calendar in advance, assuring that the electoral process would coincide with the students’ rest week. “We would be delivering two days before what corresponds,” the minister pointed out, highlighting the functionality of the electoral process in relation to the vacation period of the students.
