For the past few days, producers have been showing their dissatisfaction on certain issues relating to cotton production. To this end, the Minister of State, Abdoulaye Bio Tchané led on Tuesday April 18, 2023, a government delegation to meet farmers in the North to learn more about the reasons for their dissatisfaction and present to them the measures already taken, see how to find a way out together.

For these exchanges, the Minister of State, Abdoulaye Bio Tchané, responsible for the development and coordination of government action, had by his side his colleagues Romuald Wadagni of finance, Gaston Dossouhoui of agriculture, Sadiya Assouma of trade. This decision to go to these actors concerned comes from the Head of State, Patrice Talon, who intends to better identify their needs and difficulties in order to provide appropriate solutions. Indeed, the government’s efforts and permanent commitment have enabled soybean production to increase from less than 100,000 tonnes in 2015 to more than 400,000 tonnes in 2022. With the ambition to maintain this momentum, the president of the Republic has delegated its ministers to the field. After thanking the Head of State and the members of the government present at the meeting, the president of the Su tébo bèrè win Association of Parakou and spokesperson for the delegation, Paul Sounon, reminded the audience of the real reasons for the discontent within their corporation. According to him, the many charges borne by the producers do not allow them to enjoy the fruits of their efforts. This creates frustration in their rank when the selling price is low. Minister of State Abdoulaye, Bio Tchané made producers understand the process that leads to decision-making regarding cotton and soybeans.

Partial view of producers at the discussion table

The ministerial authority recalled the clear will of the government to make farmers independent men who benefit from their agricultural activities for a harmonious and balanced development. The Minister of State took the opportunity to list the many actions taken by the government to promote the development of the cotton, soy or even cashew sectors, in particular input subsidies or even diesel, where billions of our francs are injected each year to allow the above-mentioned sectors to develop. At the end of the discussions, the producers are better informed about the situation and are reassured that the government is working to help them. They made a commitment to give their all for a better production of cotton and soya this year in order to speak positively about Benin in the sub-region and in other countries of the world. This message they intend to bring to their base.
