The Minister of Youth and Sports Georgi Glushkov awarded honorary plaques to the participants of the first Bulgarian expedition to Everest on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the achievement.
On April 20, 1984, the peak was climbed by the Bulgarian climber Hristo Prodanov, who died on the way back. He managed to reach the top alone without an oxygen device on the most difficult and long way – the western Nepalese slope, also called the “Cruel way”. After him, on May 8, Ivan Valchev and Metodi Savov set foot on Everest, and on May 9 – Nikolay Petkov and Kiril Doskov. The expedition consists of 24 participants, and Metodi Savov, Kiril Doskov, Kostas Kanidis and Petko Totev were present at the meeting in MMC, announced the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
“I am proud of your achievement, which resonates to this day, 40 years later. Climbing Everest is a team effort and you are and should be an example to everyone of how to achieve the intended goal,” said Minister Glushkov.
Those present shared with Georgi Glushkov interesting memories of the expedition and told him about their meeting on the way to Bulgaria with Indira Gandhi, who at that time was the Prime Minister of India.
