The ‘Counselor’ for Economy of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Natalia Mas Guixheld a meeting this Saturday in Lisbon with the governor of the Bank of Portugal, Mario Centeno. Both leaders have agreed on the need to adapt European regulations to facilitate those investments focused on addressing the green transition. “If we do not adapt the stability standards to the investment needs that we have to make, we will not be able to face” the climate crisis and the reindustrialization of the economy.

The ‘councillor’ has also met with the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate of Portugal, Ana Gouveia, to learn from the success of the Portuguese country in the implementation of the energy transition, especially in the production of offshore wind energy. Both agreed on the importance of the future H2Med corridor to decarbonize industry in both countries, attract investment and strengthen Europe’s energy sovereignty. And currently 60% of the energy that Portugal consumes daily comes from clean sources and with the goal of reaching 80% by 2026.

As highlighted by the Generalitat in its statement, Mas Guix and Gouveia have agreed to express their willingness to strengthen relations between Catalonia and Portugal. Both regions are immersed in a transformation of the automotive sector and Portugal, together with Extremadura, is home to the main lithium reserve in Europe.

Mas Guix’s meetings with Centeno and Gouveia are part of a visit by the Catalan leader to Portugal, which has included visits to Porto and Lisbon, prioritizing issues related to the reindustrialization of the economy and the promotion of renewable energies. Mas Guix pointed out the close relationship between these two objectives, highlighting that “if we have more renewable energy, we will be able to decarbonize the industry and attract more companies in this sector to Catalonia.”
