The Minister of Agriculture, Danilo Palacios, explained to the country’s prefects the benefits that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China would bring to each of the provinces.
China is the world’s leading importer of agricultural products, so the FTA would represent Ecuador entering a market with 1.4 billion people.
During the meeting, Palacios pointed out that Ecuador is a country with important agricultural diversity, which must be used to achieve the development of the country’s rural sector.
He added that the treaty will improve export conditions for products such as bananas, cocoa beans and coffee. Likewise, it will be an opportunity for processed agricultural products such as guayusa tea, dairy products, animal protein, quinoa, among others. However, not all products are included in the agreement. The sensitivity of liquid and powdered milk, fresh cheese, pork and poultry, rice, sugar, potatoes, onion and others are not considered for the TLC.
Between January and November of last year, Ecuador exported 265,514 tons of agricultural products to China for an FOB value of 165 million 554,481 dollars.
