Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs Address Russia’s Threat to Sweden

In a recent speech at Folk och Försvar, Foreign Minister Tobias Billström highlighted the continuous threat posed by Russia to Sweden and Europe’s security. Billström emphasized the need to prepare for a long-term confrontation with Russia as long as it continues to violate the UN Charter and the European security order.

Furthermore, Billström reaffirmed Sweden’s military and political support for Ukraine while also welcoming the EU’s decision to welcome Ukraine into membership. He stated, “The Ukrainian soldiers are also fighting for our freedom and values,” highlighting the importance of supporting Ukraine in its efforts.

Addressing Sweden’s prospective NATO membership, Billström emphasized Sweden’s commitment to a solidary alliance policy, stating, “We support NATO’s 360-degree approach.” This approach involves Sweden taking an active role not only in the defense and security around NATO’s border with Russia but also around Europe’s southern border and in the Arctic.

According to Billström, this marks the biggest change in Swedish security policy in 200 years and signifies a new security policy identity for the country. The address comes at a critical time as Sweden reassesses its security policy and prepares for potential threats from Russia in the future.
