Europe Conference

“Our government works every day for a Christian Europe,” Justice Minister Judit Varga said at a Europe Day conference in Budapest.

The minister referred to the dictum of the co-founder of the community, Robert Schuman, according to which there will either be a Christian Europe or no Europe.

“What is successful on a small scale in Hungary today can also prove itself on a large scale in Europe,” Varga explained why the Orbán government is sticking to conservative values. In her personal work in the EU, she is always guided by the idea of respecting unity and diversity. In May 2004, Hungary joined another community in which the culture of consensus was regarded as the most important asset of the EU treaties.

Showed foresight in the migration crisis

The member states should not give up their autonomy in all areas that allow specific instruments to solve technical policy challenges. “It’s not that the Hungarians are right, it’s that they will be right,” Varga said, referring to the migration crisis of 2015. The basic principles formulated by Budapest back then are gradually becoming the dominant view in the EU.

Grab the chance

Next year, the European elections will come first, followed by the Hungarian Council Presidency in the second half of the year. It is Hungary’s second Council Presidency after 2011. “This opportunity doesn’t come along every day, we want to seize the opportunity to put our creativity to the test,” announced the minister.

The entire administration will take on an enormous burden, because as Council Presidency, Hungary wants to ensure that the goals set are achieved. The task is to formulate a viable alternative in the interest of Europe.
