Minister of Women on Playboy magazine cover page; Controversy in France

The picture of France’s women’s minister on the cover page of Playboy magazine caused controversy. French minister, feminist and author Marlene Schiappa’s picture appeared in Playboy magazine.

The leaders of the left-wing parties came against Marlin Schiappa. Schiappa’s interview on women’s and gay rights and abortion was published in Playboy. Schiappa’s interview is 12 pages long.

“Women’s right to do what they want with their bodies must be protected everywhere and always,” Schiappa wrote on Twitter on Saturday. “Women are free in France, whether they annoy reactionaries or hypocrites or not,” she said.

Other ministers expressed displeasure that a member of the cabinet was embroiled in controversy while facing protests against plans to raise the pension age for two years. Some said the picture of Schiappa wearing designer clothes for Glamor magazine sent the wrong message, with one minister saying he thought it was an April Fool’s joke when he first heard about it.

Schiappa is a regular presence on French TV talk shows and took office as a minister in 2018. Some of the positions they have already adopted have been widely debated. It was Schiappa who took the lead in introducing legislation banning street harassment.

Schiappa has authored books on the challenges of motherhood, women’s health and pregnancy. Schiappa’s 2010 book on sexuality was later weaponized by political opponents.
