The Pandayacu community of the Gonzalo Pizarro canton in Sucumbíos witnessed the announcement of the project to strengthen Intercultural Health undertaken by the Ministry of Public Health. This provides for the hiring of 79 intercultural community facilitators and 70 family physicians.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Health, José Ruales, this Tuesday, March 23, 2023. The call for the new selection process for health professionals is part of the framework of strengthening care at the first level of care. The project seeks to improve the articulation of the strategies of ancestral-traditional, alternative-complementary medicine of the National Health System. It has an investment of $12 million dollars and will be extended to several provinces of the country.

The Minister pointed out that for the provinces of Esmeraldas, Imbabura, Carchi and Sucumbíos, 14 facilitators and family doctors will be hired, specifically in the latter canton there will be 3 facilitators and 5 doctors.

The Intercultural Community Facilitators will have the mission of strengthening the participatory link with communities and social organizations through the articulation of actions to identify health problems and thus influence the determinants of health; At the same time, support the dissemination of the provision of services to patients in the native language of the town, and with intercultural belonging.

In turn, family doctors will be key in the generation of knowledge, research and community epidemiology of peoples and nationalities, as an integrating entity of the National Health System; In addition, they will strengthen the promotion of health, disease prevention, and rehabilitation in communities, towns, and nationalities. Monitoring and evaluation in the implementation of intercultural, comprehensive and community health.
