SÃO PAULO (Reuters) – The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, said this Thursday during a meeting with members of OPEC+ that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva “confirmed our letter of cooperation” with the group of oil-producing countries from January 2024.

“We look forward to joining this distinguished group and working with all 23 countries in the coming months and years,” highlighted Silveira.

The minister made statements full of praise for OPEC+, a group made up of Saudi Arabia and Russia, saying that Brazil enthusiastically follows the group’s “valuable” work.

According to him, OPEC+ preserves the “stability of the oil and energy markets.”

He further said that this “stability brings benefits not only to oil producing countries, but also to consumers.

“It is a historic moment for Brazil and the energy industry, it opens a new chapter in the history of dialogue and cooperation in the energy field,” he stated.

When contacted, Palácio do Planalto said through its press office that Brazil was invited to join OPEC+ during President Lula’s trip to Saudi Arabia, but added that the Brazilian government is still analyzing the issue.
