The Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Galin Tsokov, together with the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Violeta Koritarova, broke ground for the construction of a new building of the National Science and Mathematics High School in Sofia, the ministry’s press center reports. It will have 24 classrooms for over 600 students, which will enable the school to switch to a single-shift mode of education.
A gym with a multi-purpose hall and a STEM center will also be built, which will be equipped according to the most modern requirements. The value of the project is BGN 7.3 million without VAT, provided under the Program of the Ministry of Education and Culture for the construction, extension, upgrading and reconstruction of nurseries, kindergartens and schools.
“This is construction for the future of Bulgaria. This project is one of 43 throughout the country for the construction and upgrading of school buildings, which will allow tens of thousands of children to switch to a single-shift regime in the coming years,” said Minister Tsokov. According to him, funding for these projects has been provided by BGN 240 million, and the deadline for their completion is 2027. “With these investments, the Bulgarian education system will change to some extent, I hope not only as an environment, but also as a way of teaching and introducing innovations”, added Prof. Galin Tsokov.
He noted that the National Science and Mathematics High School is one of the most desirable and innovative schools. “It not only gives knowledge and forms skills, but also shows the future of children – both in the direction of their professional realization and in the direction of competition with the best in the world. Dozens of medalists at international science olympiads have graduated from this school,” emphasized the minister. He congratulated the high school students who are going to participate in international science olympiads in the coming weeks and wished them to return with medals as well.

Education is a lot of work for many people, but I am convinced that the infrastructure and the material base are also very important so that our children can develop their potential and be worthy people,” said the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Eng. She noted that the modernization of the educational infrastructure in Bulgaria is also a priority in the programs of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, reminding that in the period 2014-2020 with funds from the Operational Program “Growing Regions” and reconstructed 450 schools that educate over 250,000 students across the country.
The director of the school, Ivaylo Ushagelov, pointed out that with the implementation of the new building, students will get more space for learning and extracurricular activities in a modern environment with the most modern equipment for teaching mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and green technologies. He thanked the Directorates of the Ministry of Education and Culture, who, after approving the project for the new building, provided methodical support to the school for its implementation.
The ceremony was also attended by the head of the office of the Minister of Education and Science Nataliya Mihalevska and the director of the “Finance” Directorate in the Ministry of Education and Culture Sonia Krastanova, as well as the mayor of the “Lozenets” region Konstantin Pavlov and the head of the Sofia-city RUO Vanya Kastreva and others.
