On the 26th, a pilgrimage to the June 25 battle sites and memorial facilities in the border area of Gangwon-Gyeonggi Province, and commemoration of the victims.
On-site inspection with the goal of revitalizing local tourism using battlefield and war memorial facilities
Yuinchon “As a tourist resource where domestic and foreign visitors can make a pilgrimage by bicycle, etc.”
On the 26th, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon made a pilgrimage by bicycle to the Korean War battlefields and commemorative facilities in the border areas, including Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, and Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do, and paid tribute to the victims.
Minister Yoo is inspecting the site to revitalize local tourism by utilizing battlefields and commemorative facilities for participating countries. This was followed by Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do and Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do on June 15th, and Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do on August 3rd.
As the Cheorwon and Yeoncheon areas were the areas where the fiercest fighting took place during the Korean War, battlefields and commemorative facilities are located here and there.
Minister Yoo first visited the ‘White Horse Hill Battle Memorial’ and the Battle Monument in Sanmyeong-ri, Cheorwon-eup, Cheorwon-gun.
In October 1952, the ROK and US troops fought 12 battles with the Chinese army over 10 days at ‘Hill 395’ and finally won. Many ‘patriotic heroes’, including Lieutenant Kang Seung-woo, Sergeant An Young-kwon, and Sergeant Oh Gyu-bong, protected the vast Cheorwon Plain and the strategic point leading to Seoul by ‘death’.
During the battle, numerous artillery shells rained heavily on this hill. As a result, the top of the mountain turned into a bald mountain in the shape of a white horse lying down, and the area came to be called ‘White Horse Hill’.
If you visit the White Horse Hill Battle Memorial Hall, you can hear detailed explanations about the battle situation at the time.
Minister Yoo moved to Yeoncheon-gun and visited the ‘Philippine Participation Monument’ commemorating the victory of the ‘Battle of Rhythm’ by the Philippine army of the ‘brother country’ that rushed to protect the freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea during the Korean War.
In April 1951, the Philippine Army prevented the Chinese Army’s encirclement and offensive in the Yuldong-ri area, giving the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division time to successfully withdraw.
A total of 7,420 Philippine troops participated in the war, with 112 killed, 299 wounded, and 16 missing.
There are also war monuments commemorating their sacrifice in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do and Yanggu-gun, Gangwon-do.
During this on-site inspection, Minister Yoo experienced bicycle tours in border areas such as Yeoncheon-gun and Cheorwon-gun and discussed ways to create a ‘pilgrimage course’ that includes battlefields.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is making various efforts to research resources to revitalize local tourism by utilizing major battlefields and commemorative facilities for participating countries scattered across the country. In the future, we plan to develop various courses in connection with local tourism content and expand exchanges with participating countries by collaborating with related ministries such as the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
Minister Yoo said, “We will develop meaningful and valuable battlefields and commemorative facilities for participating countries throughout the country into local tourism content so that domestic and foreign visitors can make a pilgrimage by bicycle.” “We will make it an attractive tourist resource,” he said.
Meanwhile, for detailed information on memorial facilities related to the Korean War, refer to the ‘Memorial Facility Information Service’ operated by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
