Ministry of Agriculture denies shortage of wheat, from which pasta is made

by time news

The harvest of durum wheat is sufficient to meet the domestic needs of the country, the Ministry of Agriculture said. Durum wheat is used for the production of pasta, pasta factories previously complained about the shortage of wheat.

“Last year, 740 thousand tons of durum wheat was harvested in Russia, which is enough to meet the country’s internal needs,” TASS quotes an extract from the ministry’s message. According to the Center for Grain Quality Assessment, as of September 20, 326 thousand tons of durum wheat were harvested in the key surveyed regions (against 262.9 thousand tons last year). The Ministry of Agriculture also reported that the export of durum wheat this year decreased, while the volume of imports increased. There is no shortage of durum wheat on the domestic market, the ministry said.

Earlier, during a roundtable on the situation on the market, its participants said that the cost of pasta in Russia may rise, which is associated with a shortage of durum wheat among producers. According to manufacturers, many factories are now running on old stocks, which will last until the end of 2021.

To relieve tension on the market, producers have proposed introducing protective duties on the export of durum wheat. Market representatives sent a corresponding appeal to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
