Applies from 10th day shipment… Quarantine procedures for goods imported within 14 days
The government has decided to ban the import of pork and pig products from Germany, where foot-and-mouth disease has recently occurred.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has banned the import of pork and pork products from Germany from the 10th, based on the date of shipment to Germany, as the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture confirmed the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in water buffaloes and reported it to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).
This measure was taken after three water buffaloes raised at a water buffalo farm in the eastern German state of Brandenburg died and were tested positive for foot-and-mouth disease after testing at the German National Standards Laboratory. This is the first outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Germany in 37 years since 1988. This is the first outbreak in Europe since the last outbreak occurred in Bulgaria in 2011.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will apply the import ban on German pork and pork products starting from shipments made on the 10th, and will also apply to pork that arrives in Korea after being shipped within 14 days (after December 27, 2024) before the import ban date. We plan to conduct foot-and-mouth disease tests and take action based on the results. In addition, we plan to closely monitor trends in additional outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in neighboring countries such as Poland, which is close to the German outbreak area.
Currently, the volume of German pork that has arrived in Korea and is awaiting quarantine is 360 tons in 16 cases, considering the time of shipment from Germany (October 26 to November 17, 2024) and the maximum incubation period of the foot-and-mouth disease virus (14 days). Since there is no risk of infection, customs clearance will be carried out through normal quarantine procedures.
Park Beom-soo, Vice Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said, “Despite this import ban, there are many alternative import countries for pork, so the impact on the supply and demand situation of livestock products is expected to be minimal.”
