From the city of Pasto, the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, and the entire military leadership are meeting in search of solutions for public order in the region.

“We are in Pasto, Nariño, with the minister and the military and police leadership, to review the advances and security commitments in the southwest of the country, where illegal groups persist in attacking the population and the public force,” they said.

The commander of the military forces, General Helder Giraldo, and the directors of the Police, Navy and Army are meeting from this area of the southwestern part of the country.

The two professional soldiers of the Twenty-third Brigade of the Army were kidnapped this Friday, August 18 at noon, while they were traveling in two official vehicles, near the village of La Herradura, Cumbitara municipality (Nariño).

According to the Army, armed men, apparently from the Farc dissident group called Franco Benavides, intercepted the vehicles, made the two soldiers descend and later incinerated the vehicles, as evidenced in a video published by W Radio. The kidnapped uniformed men are Edwer Paz Pantoja and Nelson Vásquez Reina.

The Army rejected the retention and announced complaints, after arguing that it would be a “criminal action” that violates human rights and international humanitarian law.

This added to figures presented by the international NGO Human Rights Watch, which warned that the Colombian Pacific zone (especially Cauca and Nariño) is where the most cases of murders of social leaders occur in the country, which already completes 100 cases in this 2023 .
