On Friday, July 19, 2024, the Constitutional Court accepted the special request submitted by the Ministry of Economy regarding the budget of the Judicial Council.

The decision was made after Wilman Terán, the former president of the entity who had previously asked for more money, complained about the budget and asked for more funds.

Judge Enrique Herrería ruled that the judges of the Criminal Chamber of the Pichincha Court, José Miguel Jiménez, Mónica Bravo and Miguel Ángel Narváez, committed a “serious error” by only partially accepting the protection action presented by Terán.

Herrería mentions that the already established budget cannot be changed, for this reason the Ministry of Economy will not have to make extra payments to the Judiciary.

The decision of the Constitutional Court changes what was previously decided by the Criminal Chamber, which had accepted Terán’s appeal in its entirety and rejected the one of the Economy Court.

The Court orders that the appropriate procedures begin according to what has been decided.
