Spread into school

Remind educational institutions

Be careful of spreading infection.

The Ministry of Education is expressing concern over the increasing outbreak of influenza and is issuing a reminder to educational institutions to be vigilant in preventing the spread of infection. Schools are being urged to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of students and staff.

According to Dr. Manoon Leechawengwong, a specialist in respiratory diseases at Vichaiyut Hospital, there has been a stable spread of the COVID-19 virus, along with an increase in cases of influenza, RSV, hMPV, and dengue fever. Influenza has been surpassing COVID-19 in terms of cases for the past two months. Both children and adults are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and runny nose, making it difficult to distinguish between different respiratory viruses without laboratory testing.

Mr. Siriphong Angkhasakulkiat, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, highlights the risk posed by the rainy season, which coincides with the flu season. Educational institutions, being densely populated, are particularly vulnerable to the spread of infections. Pol. Gen. Permpoon Chidchob, the Minister of Education, is urging schools to strictly adhere to the prevention and control measures recommended by the Department of Disease Control in order to reduce sickness rates, complications, and the spread of infection.

One of the measures suggested is the implementation of a screening system for sick children. The method of screening depends on factors such as the child’s age and school characteristics. If a child is found to exhibit symptoms consistent with influenza, they should be separated from the larger group, provided with a hygienic mask, and placed in designated accommodations until their parents can pick them up. In the case of a large outbreak, schools may consider temporary closures to prevent further spread, with decisions being made in consultation with local health officials, educational institution administrators, and the school board.

The Ministry of Education also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a clean and hygienic school environment. This includes providing handwashing stations with soap or alcohol gel, promoting regular handwashing among students, and ensuring proper cleaning of frequently touched surfaces and equipment. Good ventilation is also encouraged in study areas, and the regular cleaning of drinking water dispensers is highlighted.

Furthermore, schools are encouraged to raise awareness about epidemic surveillance and prevention within the school community. This can be done through educational exhibitions and ongoing communication with students and parents. Regular exercise is also promoted to strengthen the immune systems of students and school personnel.

With the Ministry of Education issuing this reminder, educational institutions are expected to take the necessary precautions to prevent the further spread of influenza within their premises.
