The Ministry of Health is updating today (Monday) that an unvaccinated ten-week-old baby from the Jerusalem area died of whooping cough about three weeks ago. The baby developed symptoms of the disease at the age of five weeks and was hospitalized at the age of seven weeks. An epidemiological investigation revealed that the baby’s mother was not vaccinated during pregnancy. All of the baby’s contacts were checked and preventive care was given. The case was reported to the district health office.
The Ministry of Health adds: “The vaccine given to babies starting at the age of six weeks provides protection against several diseases, including whooping cough and polio. The Ministry of Health also recommends that pregnant women in their third trimester get a whooping cough vaccine to protect their children.”
Since the beginning of the year, 215 cases of whooping cough have been registered, 10 times more than in the same period last year, and 85% of the cases in the Jerusalem district.
