New Division Established to Strengthen Public Health Response to HIV, STIs, and Viral Diseases

A new division dedicated to coordinating the fight against HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), viral hepatitis, and tuberculosis has been formally established, bolstering public health infrastructure. The move, outlined in Royal Decree 718/2024 issued on July 23, aims to streamline prevention and control efforts across the nation.

The HIV, STI, Viral Hepatitis and Tuberculosis Control Division will operate within the General Directorate of Public Health, assuming specific powers related to policy coordination, planning, and monitoring. This restructuring signifies a heightened commitment to addressing these critical public health challenges.

Centralizing Public Health Strategies

The division’s core function is to develop and implement comprehensive strategies for combating these diseases, both domestically and internationally. According to the decree, the division will “plan, coordinate, develop and evaluate nationally and internationally programs, plans and strategies for the prevention and control of HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Viral Hepatitis and Tuberculosis.” A key component of this effort will be the ongoing training of healthcare professionals to better understand and address the public health impact of these conditions.

This centralized approach is expected to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of existing programs, allowing for a more unified response to emerging threats and evolving challenges.

Supporting Non-Profit Initiatives

Beyond strategic planning, the new division will also play a crucial role in supporting organizations working on the front lines of prevention and control. The division will manage financial aid requests submitted by non-profit entities dedicated to HIV and STI prevention activities, operating within the scope of the Ministry of Health’s resources.

This commitment to supporting external partners underscores a collaborative approach to public health, recognizing the vital role that community-based organizations play in reaching vulnerable populations and delivering essential services.

The establishment of this division represents a significant step forward in strengthening the nation’s public health defenses against these prevalent and potentially devastating diseases.
