Colombia hosted the first regional meeting on Safe Vaccination in the Americas, which brought together 200 immunization expert participants from April 12 to 14, 2023. In this meeting, Ecuador obtained first place in the ESAVI connection, under the FHIR standard (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), complementary activity to strengthen the Pan American digital health network.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) organized the event to stimulate the strengthening of national and regional surveillance systems for Events Supposedly Attributable to Vaccination or Immunization (ESAVI). It also included the development of the connection on the management of information systems. The participating teams trained their technological skills to report ESAVI data to PAHO using the FHIR standard.
Gabriela Vinueza, Karina Rivadeneira and Sebastián Baldeón, officials from the Undersecretary of Surveillance were the delegates of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) of Ecuador.
The MSP team with the support of PAHO implemented the DHIS2 (open source web platform used as a health information management system) and won first place in the connectathon. This recognition validated the skills in information management and ESAVI data reporting that contribute to the access, exchange, and use of information in a multidisciplinary and cooperative manner following the established standards.
The meeting brought together members of the Pan American Committee for Safe Vaccination (COPAVASE); of National Vaccination Committees; delegates from Ministries of Health; immunization programs and regulatory agencies; experts in information technology and telecommunications.
In this regard, PAHO aims to maintain a FHIR server and an ESAVI-FHIR implementation guide to support interoperability between the regional pharmacovigilance database, the global pharmacovigilance database “VigiBase”, the DIS2 and other information systems.
