Visual inspection of aircraft, engine remains and bird traces begins on the 1st
U.S. joint investigation team increased by two members… Establishment of temporary headquarters at the airport
Data extraction from the voice recording device (CVR) in the black box of Jeju Air (Flight 7C2216), which killed 181 people, has been completed and conversion of audio files has begun.
In the case of the remaining flight recorder (FDR), the special connector connecting the power supply and data storage device was lost, and the technical review on whether data could be extracted was found to be almost complete.
Joo Jong-wan, director of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Aviation Policy Division, said at a briefing at the Central Accident Control Headquarters held at the Sejong Government Complex on the morning of the 1st, “The Aviation and Railroad Accident Investigation Committee has completed extracting the data stored in the CVR and is converting this data into a voice file today. “We plan to start work,” he said.
He said, “We are continuously technically reviewing the possibility of extracting data from the damaged FDR in Korea,” and added, “Starting today, we plan to begin a visual inspection of the state of the remains such as the fuselage and engine, as well as traces of birds.”
Gyeongsoo Yoo, director of aviation safety policy, said, “FDR connectors are small and specially manufactured, so if the joint falls off, sophisticated technology is needed to reconnect it.” He added, “Based on the recovered state, it is unlikely that the data in the storage device has been damaged, and if the connector is missing, it is unlikely that the data in the storage device has been damaged.” “Because we cannot extract data, we are looking for various methods,” he explained.
Director Joo emphasized, “It appears that we are in the final stages of the committee’s technical review of whether it is possible to extract data from FDR,” and added, “It is not an issue that will take time to review, so we will look at it in detail and make a decision quickly.”
The investigation committee began the investigation by forming a joint ROK-US investigation team at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do the previous day and set up a temporary headquarters within the airport. Currently, a total of 22 people are participating, including 12 members from Korea and 10 from the United States.
The night before, two additional officials from American aircraft manufacturer Boeing entered the country. Currently, one member from the Federal Aviation Administration, three members from the National Transportation Safety Board, and six members from Boeing have joined the investigation team.
