The Ministry of Mines and Energy released this Monday, the 17th, the tariff for the electricity service of Itaipu Binacional for the year 2023. The value will be US$ 16.71/KW, which represents a drop of 19.5% in relation to 2022. The new price was defined in an extraordinary meeting of the Board of Directors of Itaipu, composed by 12 directors, six Brazilians and six Paraguayans, in addition to two representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, one from each country. The group came to a consensus on the Unitary Cost of Electricity Services (CUSE), that is, the cost for producing energy at Itaipu. The tariff takes into account the debt for the construction of the hydroelectric plant, paid off this year with a total payment of US$ 63.5 billion. “An advance in the management of Itaipu, in the sense of seeking an adequate binational policy, of consensus between the two boards and the two councils – Paraguayan and Brazilian. What was done today demonstrated the spirit of the Lula government, which is one of conciliation and dialogue, always in search of energy security and low tariffs for the consumer of Brazilian electricity”, said the minister of the portfolio, Alexandre Silveira. The Ministry declared that the tariff reduction reflects the new cost scenario of the binational and informed that the tariff is charged from the purchasing entities, the Brazilian Company of Participations in Nuclear and Binational Energy (ENBPar) and the National Electricity Administration (Ande), from the Paraguay. In Brazil, the Itaipu tariff is one of the components considered for the definition of the Transfer Tariff, applied to the consumer by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).
