The Democratic Party of Korea emphasized the need for a swift investigation into the truth and relief for the victims, saying that “the government appears to be trying to downplay and distort the situation” regarding the T-Map incident that caused a large-scale settlement delay.

The Democratic Party of Korea’s Timep Incident Response Task Force held a press conference on the ‘Timep Incident Cover-up, Reduction, and Inadequate Response’ at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul on the afternoon of the 20th, and criticized the government’s response to this incident.

Rep. Chun Jun-ho, who is in charge of the TF, said, “The government has not announced the exact amount of damage, let alone an approximate figure, even though more than a month has passed since the incident occurred.” He added, “Earlier this month, there were reports that the damage estimated by Timep and the other companies amounted to 1 trillion won, but the government’s final settlement announced on August 7 was only 270 billion won.”

Rep. Lee Jeong-moon also said, “The gift certificate sector, which was one of the areas with the greatest damage in the Timep Incident, is hiding all the information to the point that one suspects that the government is trying to cover it up,” and emphasized, “If it is not intentional to cover it up or downplay the situation, the government has a duty to transparently disclose it to the public.”

There have also been claims that the government promised to refund some of the affected sectors, but has not followed through. In July, financial authorities announced that they would cooperate with PG companies and others to proceed with refund procedures for gift certificates and travel products.

Regarding this, Rep. Kim Hyun-jung said, “The government said it would deal with the refund issue quickly, but we have confirmed that refunds are not being processed through any means,” and urged, “The Financial Supervisory Service should grasp the situation as soon as possible, resolve it, and conduct a legal review of refund-related issues.”

The Timep TF voiced its opinion that there should be a ‘one-stop’ window where victims can receive damage reports, receive loan support, and receive rehabilitation counseling all at once to quickly provide relief to victims.

Rep. Chun said, “The victims of the incident are still confused as to where and what kind of help to ask for,” and “Our task force has repeatedly requested that a one-stop window be created for the victims, but the government is turning a blind eye.”

Rep. Oh Se-hee suggested, “We should provide guidance on what kind of help is available depending on the type of damage, and if the number of sacrifices and bankruptcies among sellers increases in the future, we should also provide legal support for this.”

Rep. Kim Nam-geun, who is the TF secretary, said, “We must urgently open a window to support personal rehabilitation procedures and provide immediate support to sellers requesting legal assistance, etc.,” adding, “I will hold a meeting with the Financial Service Center and the Credit Recovery Committee this week and urge them to begin procedures immediately.”

Regarding the fact that the National Assembly’s Political Affairs Committee has not held a hearing regarding this incident, one lawmaker said, “Despite our repeated requests to convene a meeting and hold a hearing, they have not been accepted,” and added, “I once again request your cooperation so that a plenary session and hearing can be held.”
