For its part, the company involved ruled out the presence of the mycotoxin reported by the Ministry of Health and described what happened as “a discrepancy.”

The Ministry of Health reported the presence of the mycotoxin Ochratoxin A in a sample of Gourmet brand merkén, from the Tarapacá Region, so ordered the product to be withdrawn nationwide.

The lots involved are as follows:

  • Merkén Gourmet brand, 21 gram jar format, lot 319370, with expiration date 11/25/2025
  • Merkén Gourmet brand, 100 gram bag format, batch 320574 with expiration date 12/15/2025.

From the Minsal they explained that “Ochratoxin A is a toxin produced by fungi that can cause health problems. Although the product presents a contamination that does not cause acute or immediate poisoning, Its prolonged consumption could cause chronic health problems such as in the liver, kidney, nervous system, pregnant women, among other body systems.”

Faced with this situation, The company involved responded that after learning of the statement from the public body “compared the information with the analyses carried out in laboratories independent of the company, on all the raw materials involved in the production of this product, which certifies that In none of our products and raw materials was the presence of Ochratoxin or any other toxin that could cause damage to people’s health detected.as we made clear to the Seremi.”

In light of this, they described what happened as “a discrepancy” and made it clear that they will maintain “a permanent dialogue with the authorities, providing all the information that can help us clarify this situation.”
