According to the survey of 1,000 people, 21 percent believe that HIV-positive individuals pose a danger to society, indicating a persistent stigma surrounding the virus. Additionally, 31 percent of respondents believe that HIV can be transmitted through a kiss, and over ten percent think that infections are possible through insect bites or sharing dishes and toilets. These misconceptions highlight the need for more education and awareness about the true methods of HIV transmission.
The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) in Switzerland reports that around 17,500 people live with HIV in the country, with approximately 50 new infections each year. Globally, around 39 million individuals are living with the virus. Despite these numbers, many people remain unaware of the reality of living with HIV and the effective methods of treatment and prevention.
The “VolksBlatt” also highlights the fact that HIV can be easily treated with medication, preventing the disease from breaking out in the body and making it non-contagious. The safest and easiest protection against HIV remains the use of condoms.
