Mishustin urged to prepare to reduce the use of oil and gas

Russia needs to prepare for a gradual reduction in the use of traditional fuels – oil, gas and coal, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said during an operational meeting with the Deputy Prime Ministers.

“The global economy is focused on a gradual transition to low-carbon energy. And this is already a new reality. We need to prepare for a phased reduction in the use of traditional fuels – oil, gas, coal. Improve energy efficiency. Develop alternative energy. Build the appropriate infrastructure, ”he said.

According to Mishustin, an action plan should be approved by the end of this year to adapt the Russian economy to the global energy transition. To prepare it for the conditions of low-carbon development, it is planned to create working groups, which will be supervised by First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov.

At the same time, Belousov himself said that the government plans to work in ten directions. These include accelerating the technological modernization of sectors of the Russian economy, encouraging companies to modernize the transition to green technologies and reducing emissions, as well as work to achieve international recognition of measures based on the country’s technological and natural advantages, including the absorptive capacity of forests.

By October 1 of this year, the government plans to develop the main parameters of a long-term forecast, calculated until 2050, which will form the basis for further actions. It will include information on energy and carbon balance, macroeconomic parameters, GDP, investments, opportunities and risks.

Belousov noted that the ongoing changes associated with minimizing the use of fossil energy sources are comparable in scale to the industrial revolution or the scientific and technological revolution of the 20th century. According to the First Deputy Prime Minister, in 10-15 years the structure of the world economy will change dramatically.
