Seven young women, finalists of the Miss Universe Indonesia competition, filed a complaint with the police, accusing the organizers of the competition of sexual harassment, their lawyer announced on Tuesday. During the competition, which took place in Jakarta from July 29 to August 3, the organizers asked the 30 finalists to strip naked, two days before the coronation ceremony, in order to carry out physical examinations. Five of them were even photographed.

Representatives of the company that organizes the Miss Universe Indonesia competition, PT Capella Swastika Karya, had insisted on the need to examine any presence of “scars, cellulite or tattoos on their bodies”, specifies the lawyer for the finalists, Mellisa Anggraini. “They did not know that they would be subject to such a procedure, since it was originally to be a fitting”, underlines the lawyer.

Further investigations to come

The number of complainants could increase, according to the lawyer, encouraged by the seven participants who have already filed a complaint. These complaints will be investigated and may serve “as a basis for further investigations”, Jakarta police spokesman Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko told reporters.

Miss Universe Indonesia National Director Poppy Capella thanked on Instagram everyone who shared “their opinions, feelings and analysis with us” after the incident. “Your comments are not just words: they are a powerful driving force,” she wrote.

The aim of the Jakarta pageant was to select Indonesia’s representative for the annual Miss Universe pageant to be held in El Salvador on November 18. France will be represented by Diane Leyre, elected Miss France 2022. The Miss Universe beauty contest has existed since 1952.
