/ A US Department of Defense official said that US and allied forces in Syria were targeted with missiles on Monday, after three US soldiers were killed in a drone attack in northeastern Jordan.

“Several rockets were fired at US and coalition forces at the Shaddadi base in Syria. There were no reports of casualties or damage to infrastructure,” the US military official told AFP, requesting anonymity, referring to the base in northeastern Syria.

“The United States and coalition forces have been attacked at least 165 times since mid-October — 66 times in Iraq, 98 times in Syria and one in Jordan — by attack drones, rockets, mortars and short-range ballistic missiles,” the military official said.

The United States has about 900 soldiers in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq as part of the international coalition to fight ISIS, which had controlled large parts of both countries.

US forces in Iraq and Syria have faced a surge in attacks since mid-October, with a coalition of Iran-backed militias opposed to US support for Israel in the Gaza war claiming responsibility for many of them.

Dozens of American soldiers have been wounded in previous attacks, but no deaths from enemy fire in the Middle East since the start of the war on Gaza until Sunday, when a drone attack killed three American soldiers and wounded more than 30 others.

The White House vowed on Monday to “respond appropriately” to the attack in Jordan that has raised fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East.
