The body of Luis Martín Iiguez, a correspondent for the newspaper La Jornada who had disappeared, was found this Saturday, with signs of violence, in the Mexican state of Nayarit, the local prosecutor’s office said.

“The body was found with signs of violence and, on top of it, two cards with a caption. It was identified by family members as belonging to the communicator Luis Martín Snchez Iiguez”, says the statement from the prosecution.

The journalist’s body was located this Saturday morning, in a rural area near Tepic, the capital of Nayarit. According to the local press, he was apparently with his hands tied and wrapped in plastic bags. The messages would be from criminal groups.

The first active journalist murdered in Mexico in 2023, Iiguez was the third correspondent for La Jornada – a left-wing newspaper based in the Mexican capital and founded in 1985 – which has been murdered in recent years.

Nayarit, located on the Pacific coast, neighboring the states of Sinaloa and Jalisco, where the two largest Mexican drug cartels operate.

According to RSF, Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists to work in. More than 150 journalists have been murdered in the country since 2000, according to the organization.

According to the government, 13 homicides of reporters were recorded in 2022 alone. Authorities are investigating whether these facts were related to the victims’ profession.

Most crimes involving communicators go unpunished.
