Some 5 thousand tons of rice were unloaded in the port of Santiago de Cuba, to complete the Basic Basket corresponding to the month of November for consumers in that province and Guantánamo.

Yosvany Pupo Otero, vice minister of Domestic Trade, stated a few days ago at the Round Table that “the regulated seven pounds of rice will be sold, although its sale has been divided into two moments,” stating that in December the same amount will be sold and without delays.

And rice has become, like many foods in Cuba, a product that is increasingly scarce. The price on the black market is higher every day.

At the beginning of the month, many Cubans reported on social networks that only three pounds of rice and three of sugar arrived at the warehouses. The response from the Ministry of Domestic Trade was that in a “fractional and gradual” manner, each consumer’s seven pounds of rice for the month of November would be sold, “depending on the amount of cereal arrivals to the country.”

The distribution of the product, they said, would be affected by financial difficulties that limit timely imports of rice. Luckily, in both Santiago and Guantánamo the shortage for this month is already distributed. Even wholesale companies will try to complete a pound of the family basket that has been pending since October.
