The Church’s Vital Lifeline: How the ‘Pence’ Sustains Faith and Community in France

A critical fundraising campaign, focused on the “Pence,” is underway to ensure the continued operation of Catholic dioceses in France, highlighting the Church’s reliance on the generosity of its faithful and offering donors a significant tax deduction.

As the year draws to a close, amidst the celebrations of Christmas and the anticipation of the New Year, a traditional appeal is gaining momentum: the annual collection for the Denier – commonly known as the Church Pence. This fund remains a cornerstone of financial support for Catholic dioceses throughout France, enabling essential pastoral, charitable, and educational work.

Beyond Public Funding: The Faithful’s Role

Contrary to common assumptions, the Catholic Church in France does not rely on substantial public subsidies for its daily operations. Instead, its financial stability is overwhelmingly dependent on the voluntary contributions of its parishioners. This act of giving is presented not merely as a financial transaction, but as a profound expression of spiritual commitment and solidarity.

The origins of this practice are deeply rooted in religious tradition. From the tithes of the Old Testament, used to support priests and Levites, to the shared resources of early Christian communities dedicated to aiding the most vulnerable, the principle of collective support has long been central to the faith. As one individual shared, “I thought that the Church had other resources. One day, a priest explained to me very simply the concrete needs… I then understood that the Pence was essential.” This historical context underscores the enduring significance of the Pence as a continuation of these ancient practices.

What Does the Pence Fund?

The funds collected through the Pence are allocated to a wide range of critical needs within the Church. These include the salaries of priests and lay staff involved in pastoral care, education, and administration; the upkeep of church buildings and other facilities; and the funding of charitable initiatives, sacramental preparation, and spiritual events like pilgrimages. Without this consistent financial support, many of these vital programs would be at risk.

Supporting the Church, advocates argue, is an investment in the fabric of society. The institution provides crucial support during life’s significant moments – from baptisms and weddings to times of grief and uncertainty. It also plays a vital role in faith transmission, ensuring that future generations have access to religious education and the sacraments.

A Community Effort: Stories of Giving

The impact of the Pence is felt across all demographics within the Catholic community. Individuals from all walks of life contribute, motivated by a shared sense of responsibility and a desire to support the Church’s mission.

A young parishioner, donating for the first time, emphasized that the amount given is less important than the act of participation itself. “Even modestly, giving means that the Church matters to me,” she stated. For a retired couple, giving to the Pence has been a lifelong practice, deeply intertwined with their personal journey of faith. “The Church has accompanied us every step of the way,” they explained, adding that their contribution is a way of “allowing others to receive what we have received.”

These testimonials reveal a diverse and united Church, sustained by the collective commitment of its members. The Church’s Pence is more than just financial support; it is a tangible symbol of a living, breathing community.

Tax Benefits and the 2025 Campaign

Donors to Aleteia, a partner in this effort, can benefit from a tax deduction of 66% of their income. The current campaign, focused on CHRISTMAS 2025, aims to secure the future of Aleteia’s evangelization efforts and ensure the continued provision of essential services. Donations can be made “in 3 clicks,” streamlining the process for supporters.

This collaborative effort, undertaken in partnership with the Conference of Bishops of France, underscores the importance of collective action in sustaining the Church’s mission and serving the needs of communities across the nation.
