A citizen who came to be questioned at a police station entered the bathroom and found a weapon left by one of the station’s officers and stole it outside the station. The man is under arrest and the police have opened an investigation against the officer who allegedly abandoned his weapon
A serious failure occurred yesterday (Monday) at the Zebulon Police Station in the Coastal District. A man who arrived for questioning at the station went out for a bathroom break until his questioning began, where he discovered to his astonishment weapons that had allegedly been abandoned by a police officer serving at the station. The citizen stole the weapon and managed to hide it outside the station.
Minutes later, the disappearance of the weapon was revealed and the man, who was pressured by the special forces who were called to the scene and closed the station, hurried and confessed to the theft and brought the weapon from the place where he had buried it. In the Department of Investigations, police officers opened an investigation against the police officer for allegedly abandoning a weapon.
Immediately after the end of the incident and the return of the weapon, the man returned to the interrogation to which he was summoned. Following the incident, the suspect was arrested and brought to the Kiryat Magistrate’s Court, which released him, but delayed the release due to an appeal filed by the police.
As mentioned, following the police appeal, the district court overturned the decision of the magistrate’s court and extended the suspect’s detention until tomorrow (Wednesday). Attorney Tomer Neve, the suspect’s attorney, said in response that “this is an incident that is being investigated by the police investigation department, upon completion of the investigation the matter will be forwarded to the competent authorities for review.”
The Israel Police stated: “Following a report by a police officer serving at the Zebulon station that he forgot his personal weapon in the bathroom at the police station, the police opened an investigation. The suspect in the act was arrested yesterday, and led the police to the location of the weapon. Following the incident, an investigating officer was appointed to investigate the circumstances of the case.”
