M’jid El Guerrab will not be able to sit with the majority

After two years of ineligibility, M’jid El Guerrab wants to return to the benches of the hemicycle. But the ex-deputy will not be able to sit in the National Assembly alongside the majority if he is elected during a legislative by-election in April. M’jid El-Guerrab hit the headlines in August 2017. During an altercation, he beat a socialist leader, Boris Faure, with a motorcycle helmet. These facts had earned him a one-year prison sentence and two years of ineligibility, which he appealed.

He has today announced his intention to run for his old seat in the 9th constituency of French people living abroad which includes the Maghreb and West Africa. “Someone who has been recognized for acts of violence does not have to sit with us,” said MP Prisca Thévenot, one of the spokespersons for the Renaissance group, during the Sunday in politics program on France 3. She added that this was the position of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly and of its president, Aurore Bergé.

She also clarified that she did not want M’jid El Guerrab to be able to claim the label of the Macronist party during this election scheduled for April 2 and 16. After his criminal conviction, M’jid El Guerrab reached a civil transactional agreement with his victim in October 2022, with the aim of “turning the page”.
