jpnn.comJAKARTA – Chairman of the PDI Perjuangan DPP Deddy Yevri Sitorus said that the MKD should be able to protect members of the DPR, who speak out to the public to defend the interests of the people.

He said this in response to the DPR RI MKD’s move to investigate legislator Rieke Diah Pitaloka, after speaking out critically about the 12 percent VAT.

“The MKD should have been created to protect the freedom of DPR members to speak, not to restrain or punish,” said Deddy via messaging service, Monday (30/12).

The former Walhi activist said it was dangerous for the DPR to use the MKD as a tool to pressure legislators so that they do not speak out critically about government policies.

“It is very dangerous for the DPR if the MKD is used as a means to cut the tongues of its members,” said Deddy.

He also said that it would be dangerous if the DPR used the MKD to label legislators as committing crimes, such as provocation based on public complaints.

“So, the DPR institution has the potential to simply become a rubber stamp for power. Something which is certainly contrary to the reason the DPR created an institution called MKD,” said Deddy.

According to him, the MKD should take issue with DPR members who neglect their duties to convey the aspirations of the people. Not towards legislators who are critical of government policies.

Chairman of the PDI Perjuangan DPP, Deddy Yevri Sitorus, said that the MKD should not examine DPR members who speak critically.
