The Liver Stomach Foundation (MLDS) has drafted 3 spearheads for the new government. The foundation wants to bring forward the bowel cancer screening program, cheaper fiber-rich food and more public toilets.
With the spearheads, the MLDS wants to promote healthy digestion for everyone and thus reduce the risk of various diseases. Firstly, the foundation would like to lower the starting age for the bowel cancer screening program to 50 years. According to the organization, this is expected to prevent at least 750 and probably 1,000 deaths each year in the long term.
Secondly, the MLDS proposes a structural price reduction of healthy and fiber-rich food. Think vegetables, fruits and plant based foods rich in fiber such as legumes. The average fiber intake in the Netherlands is half the recommended amount, and a diet rich in fiber can reduce the risk of colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, according to the foundation.
As a third front, the MLDS cites national regulations for many public toilets. This must mean that a public toilet is available every 500 meters in centers (shopping) and in busy pedestrian areas. Currently, 1 in 4 people stay at home due to a lack of public toilets, according to the MLDS.
