What is mobile number portability

The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) provides mobile users the facility to change their network provider without changing the number. Suppose you use a Jio SIM, and you do not like Jio’s network and service, then you can change it to Airtel or any other service provider without changing your mobile number. This service is used extensively by customers.

100 crore mark crossed

If the report of the Department of Telecommunication is to be believed, people are using this service in large numbers. If the figures are to be believed, till 6th July, the Mobile Number Portability Service has crossed the 100 crore mark. Let us tell you that the MNP service was started in India on 20th January 2011. If the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is to be believed, on an average, every month in India, about 1.1 crore requests are received for porting mobile SIMs.

Around 1 crore MNP requests every month

TRAI said that India has created a new record on July 6, 2024. India has so far received 100 crore mobile number porting requests. If we talk about May 2024 this year, then 1.2 crore mobile numbers have been ported in that month. TRAI has recently announced changes in the rules of mobile number portability. In such a situation, users will be given a waiting period of 7 days to port the mobile number. A waiting period of seven days will be given for the company to issue a unique porting code.

rules for changing sim changed

TRAI believes that the new change will help in reducing the incidents of SIM swap. The Ninth Amendment Bill of Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability issued on 14 March 2024 in the country came into force on 1 July 2024. Under the new rule, if the request is made within 7 days of SIM swap or replacement, then UPC (number) will not be issued.
