Many drivers in Qatar are reported to be using mobile phones while driving. According to the survey, one-fifth of drivers use a mobile phone. The survey, conducted by the Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center at Qatar University, polled 256 people. Of these, only 13 per cent said they had not used a mobile phone in the last 10 trips. The survey also found that one-fifth of these were mobile users on their last trips.

According to a new report by the World Health Organization, speeding and mobile phone use are the leading causes of road accidents. Road accidents kill 1.35 million people a year and seriously injure many more. Last year, the Directorate General of Transport said that 80-90 per cent of road accidents in the country are due to the use of mobile phones while driving.

But the road accident death rate in Qatar is much lower than in other countries. Despite having an excellent road network, the failure to comply with the rules of the road is a major headache for the authorities. The QTTSC chief said it was as criminal for drivers to focus on navigation maps while driving as it was to make phone calls. Muhammad y al-Qaradawi clarified.
