An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred in the maritime area north of Crete, according to a preliminary estimate from the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.
The epicenter of the earthquake is located 38 kilometers north-northeast of Heraklion, Crete.
The focal depth of the tremor is estimated at 15.6 kilometers.
The initial estimate reported a tremor of 4.7 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake felt throughout Crete
Based on testimonies to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the tremor was felt throughout Crete, mainly in the regional units of Heraklion and Lasithi.
Currently, there are no reports of damage.
Two smaller tremors followed, measuring 3.5 and 3.2 on the Richter scale, in roughly the same area.
